The Sonata for Tuba Solo
Leonard Dumitriu is currently the conductor at the Romania Opera House of Iasi, a position he assumed in 1986 after being conductor of the Craiova Lyric Theater Orchestra. He is also the conductor of the Lyric Theatre of Galati, also in Romania.
In the course of his career, Maestro Dumitriu has conducted many opera performances in Iasi, Craiova, Cluj, Timisoara, Brasov, Galati (Romania), Novi Sad (Serbia), and Chisinau (Republic of Moldavia). He has been a guest conductor of Symphony Orchestras throughout Romania and of the Montpelier Chamber Orchestra in Vermont. Mr. Dumitriu was previously conductor of the Bacau Symphony Orchestra and is a permanent guest conductor at the Brasov Lyric Theater.
A native of Iasi, Romania, Maestro Dumitriu is also an accomplished composer and member of the Romanian Composers Union. His works have been recorded and broadcast by the National Romanian Radio Corporation and many are published in the USA and Germany. He resides in Iasi with his wife and daughter.
The Sonata for Tuba Solo ventures into a new direction for Puna Music and the publishing industry in general. An unaccompanied solo for flute or violin can be found in every publisher's catalog, however, an unaccompanied work for tuba is extremely adventurous as the tuba has never been considered a strong solo instrument, particularly without the help of the traditional piano accompaniment.
Thanks to the Cold War, the music of Romanian composers was never widespread in the United States. In this new era, Puna Music is privileged to introduce such a fine piece to American audiences.
